iDelft is developing software, but is also offering software licences, hosting and support. We always draft written agreements (contracts to deliver software, SLA's or prepaid bundles with support hours).
Clients typically want to know upfront what the costs will be. We therefore make quotations that describe the major timelines and mutual commitments and the payment terms. This helps to avoid surprises.
In order to make a good and relevant quotation, we need to invest time and efforts (specially when we need to inspect a complete web-portal prior to taking over responsibilities). In such case, we will charge an inspection (in-take) fee.
We want to be transparent when it comes to prices. We typically charge an hourly fee that is 50% higher than a plumber of other professional in the building industry in The Netherlands. The rate is higher; not because we feel superior (not at all). We need, however, to invest serious time to track the latest developments in IT and we need to experiment and practice in our own testing environment. Having said that, we feel like we are also building construction workers by profession: we make web portals instead of buildings, but like the building industry, we work according to a plan and we try to re-use existing building blocks to save costs.
